Maru is the Japanese word for "circle". I was born in Japan and my mother is Japanese. Needless to say Japanese culture is a recurring theme in my designs. In particular I use the circle a lot. The circle symbolises completion ie, coming full circle, achieving a goal. In Japan the word maru also describes one of the walls of defence around a castle. It is used as a symbol of protection. The word maru is also applied to the end of ship names in Japan, as a way to ensure its safe return. I love the symbolism and sentment behind the word. What a lovely way to congratulate or commemorate someone's achievement. Or to send someone off on a journey with the sentiment of protection and a safe return. All of the pieces on the Maru Collection were designed with this in mind. They are made to last a lifeti me and to be passed down from one generation to the next.
